I know it's been done before but I'm looking for any info that would help in the decision making process. I have a roughly 450/475g tank I am thinking about setting up in the backyard. Looking for anyone with first hand experience with this that can share their journey the good and bad.

Where do you live? Temperature and weather could be an issue.

Would suggest putting it in a green house with some kind of shade cloth to cover the tank in hot months and a chiller. and some kind of space heater for the winter in a green house.

Also i seen ramping up the shade in the summer, then ramping down the shade for winter with extra t-5, or led,
Here is a link of a guys backyard business growing coral

I was just reading about a reef tank and green house. I guess being outside, a green house would be most ideal.

do a search on O2manyfish. He is down in LA / Southern California so will have 100 times better weather than you I believe but he houses a full blown tank outside. It is huge and gorgeous! Has a complete system which he just updated in fact that ties it all together outside, frag, inside, etc. Just an amazing set up all around that is something I personally use as an example of how a reef in home aquaria looks.

heck of a guy - so yeah - outside, longevity, shares knowledge, etc. Videos with commentary too - I think you won't be disappointed.
