There’s not many hobby’s that compare to reefing but keeping planted terrariums or vivariums comes very close.

I kept frogs and geckos for years in planted tanks but it wasn’t until more recently I really started to get into the plants and creating a scape with meticulous pruning and I’ve found many similarities between my vivarium and reef tanks.

If you ever get bored with reefing or just want to try a new project I’d highly recommend a planted vivarium.

I’ve had this tank going for about 6 years now and it’s gone through multiple re scapes, went to a relatives home for about a year and was neglected now back with me at my work office and trying to get it back to its glory days.

Here’s the vivarium at its prime 3-4 years ago this was with LED/UVB T5s

Here’s its current state LED only. I will be adding another UVB bulb sooner than later as the plants responded very well under that combo.

I actually started doing vivariums first way before reefing. My first terrarium is 4 years old now. Completely diy which i and my dad built together. Its about, l×w×h, 4×1×3 feet. Then i got a paludarium which is abandonned right now, i will get back to it mid this year. Then i got my first pet, a pacman frog, which i kept in a another terrarium. As of now, my reef tank is the newest and probably the last tank setup i have done. I will share some pics later.

A lot of us came from doing planted freshwater tanks (which I still do) which is very similiar to yours...minus the water of course lol.
For sure, a lot of the mosses in there are considered "aquatic" and I have a few Anubias that do well with the constant moisture/humidity

That will look awesome when it fills in more. The vertical height is a plus imo, it gives the more natural look and gives the climbing plants room to grow up. If I ever do another build I want 3-4ft minimum of vertical space in the enclosure.

I know. It actually used to be 1ft tall for this whole time untill last year, i decided to make it 2ft tall, then i made 3ft tall. It actually has a small pond that i accidentally made but it looked cool. Sadly i had to drain it because an absolute ton of mosquitoes started coming.

Beautiful! I’ve always wanted a dart frog vivarium.
I’ve had probably 2-3 dozen blue Jeans raised in this vivarium. I moved them out of this tank about a year ago now I have some breeder cemetery bastis waiting on froglets again.

Few pics of the Blue Jeans, still my favorite frog

Cool! I have always wanted dart frogs too! But they were too expensive. In fact, my entire reef tank was cheaper to build than to buy 5 dart frogs.

They certainly aren't cheap anymore, I'm sure there's some extra hurdles getting them shipped to that part of the world, if you're in Malaysia. For me, I spend a lot less money and time on the vivarium compared to my reef.

That look awesome, love the colors. How big is this one? Beside for reef tanks and my love for plants. This have to be my next goal. Might need some questions answered if you don’t mind

Ask away! The tank is 150gal, it used to be a fully stocked reef tank but the acrylic seams were looking sketchy so it was converted to this.
