I don't think he is American.....There was a guy over at Grimreefers.com that was having big issues with them(mods) about eels and the advice they would give. I think it is the same person, he would take a lot of flames, but knew what he was talking about when it came to eels. He also had the same issue at RC aggressive forum.

As a mod for another site I can tell you RC could change their policies and lighten up on regular users and crack down on thread hijackers and flamers/haters.

My 2 big gripes with RC is this...

1. They promote propagation but if you set up frag tanks and start to really propagate you are deemed a commercial hobbyist and have privileges suspended. However, if you follow the sales boards you see the same people selling without any troubles. This is a double standard. If you truly promote the hobby and propagation then let people sell what ever.(reef related)

2. They are adamant about being NON-profit Non commercial proliferation!
Yet this same board charges $500 minimum a month and $1000 a month for more banner flashes. Not to mention the $20 premium member fee. That is an awful lot of money a year! Besides information from its members does it give anything to the community for the cash received?

I post all over the place because I am a huge hobbyist. I have been doing this for 25+ years. I have Tetra articles from the 70's and the first FAMA magazine from Don Dewey. I have seen this hobby go thru many changes/cycles. The online community started 20 years ago and if used right can be an incredible tool for everyone to benefit from. I believe as members of the overall community we have responsibilties to act civil and help each other. Unfortunately there are people out there who only care about making money and not the hobby. There are those who also start stuff with other members because they themselves have issues and want to lash out for no reason. Both of these types of people require moderating so that the rest of us can enjoy the hobby and get to know each other. Moderating abuses shouldn't have to be tolerated though. RC is a giant but has an army of moderators that could do a better job.

...that's the reason why I like this Board!! Folks here don't 'diss' each other and you feel more at home here .... well other than our Canadian Reef site..:D
Keep up the good work...everybody!! :angel1:

this quote is an interesting subject that deserves a thread of its own.

i myself live in the UK the land of dull zoas's and as a collector i have to pay a premium for anything nice here that shows up and also over the coming months/years while i have this addiction i can see myself spending $1000's of your dollars on regular imports of zoa frags from your side of the pond.

so am i commercial as i now have 2x prop tanks to grow a my own frags of my own collection to pay for my hobby. if you work out every penny/cent you spend on this hobby of ours the cost soon sky rockets, ive not gone mad like some and have a 4ft reef and probably spent over £2500 from so far(about $4500) and im not including running costs either here.

so if and when ive grown and sold 200 frags i may catch up with my previous outlay lol

the marine hobby must be one of the most expensive hobbies to get into and like many other hobbies ppl sell/swap their collection to pay for it all, so no matter how many frags i grow i dont think ill ever really make money cause of the continued running costs and morph purchases ill be making.

but with 2x prop tanks am i now commercial? lol,

>but with 2x prop tanks am i now commercial? lol,

NO

YES. You are commercial here. You wish to make a profit to offset costs for the hobby. Many boards(not all boards) feel that a steady income generated from fragging to pay for a hobby is a commercial endeavor. Period!

Yep. If you are growing frags for the purpose of re-selling, then you are considered commercial. I think that is true on almost all sites. Trading back and forth to further a collection is a different animal.

But if you have a little magnet style frag rack and grow out nice frags to sell so you can get more salt, or bulbs or other cool frags, that is not commercial IMO.

hehe.. that's me...

;)

I use them frag racks to grow mini colonies for trade & sell purposes... it's the only way I can have the hobby pay for itself a little... :)

It is a sticky subject... I may make about $1000 a year off of frags and always have some for sale, but end up trading and giving alot away... My frags sell cheap ($5-15... otherwise they don't move around here). I'm certainly not commercial, but frag some of the things I've lost interest in over time for the purpose of buying other frags (or replenishing the reef budget since I decided that getting a few more corals was more important than buying new VHO bulbs for the three main tanks back in November-good thing my schedule is a 6 month replacement ;) ).

I have to say that on CZ, just growing frags to re-sell is not going to automatically going to make you commercial. If you have 2 prop tanks and that's your plan, then yeah, I'm going to say your commercial. But if you have a little magnet style frag rack and grow out nice frags to sell so you can get more salt, or bulbs or other cool frags, that is not commercial IMO. Basically what I look for is patterns of selling. If you have stuff for sale on a regular basis or it appears your chopping, you will be looked at as commercial...

But like I said, it's a tough call and we'll deal with on a case by case basis. :)

I can agree with that.

And I love the sites best that talk to a guy about it versus sending a patronizing email with a few ugly/threatening words sprinkled in. As an administrator working anywhere, it isn't ever as much about enforcing the rules as it is about how you treat people in the process of enforcing said rules.

You can give any monkey a bat, and he'll enforce rules all day long and run folks off your venture. Ask a leader to enforce rules, and people with problems will refer other people to your site because they get what you are trying to do there.

thats my point at wat stage is the line crossed tobe regarded as commercial, i have 2 prop tanks to do all the things quoted here by gflat but if i put them all in a big sump then the view of my set up will be different lol,

overall i understand the general view of quantity and regularity = can be regarded as commercial

so i have a question and i this is where your views are of interest here..... in your opinion how many frags being sold per month would you warrent that person commercial.

I got marked for commercial once, on a forum that isn't up now. Let me start off with my story.

I have 2 tank, one FOWLR, one seahorse reef. I have never traded, sold, or fragged anything, I can honestly say that.Anyone could go on any forum, check all my private messages, I'm setting up trades, I know how to frag, but have never sold, traded, or fragged.

They said I was selling easily 30 frags a week, in threads, not including pm's. Banned me and that was the end, didn't care, I just like the pictures of the zoas.LOL

i guess this is a touchy subject as replies are short coming lol

it may be a sore subject for some...but more or less for those of us who dealt with some issues b/w CZ and RC over the summer, this more or less just seems like beating the preverbial dead horse.

i realize there are obvious differences b/w the two forums, and i respect the rules at each site. so i just try not to step on any toes in either forum. ;)

Well, I am not fond of RC. I have been over there several times. There are some really mean people on that forum. I like places like here and a few other boards where people are actually willing to help you and not bash you or call you dumb in a round about way.
