Return pump failure

Hello all, I have as of tonight run out of patience in this marine hobby, my return pump which is 2 month old has died, unsure if related or not but my tank was gargling all night long and return pump section of sump was rather full, today cleaned the pump plugged all together and the flow controller lights came on then dimmed down slowly went out and pump went off, was quite warm to the touch too, it is a Red Sea g2 8000, any suggestions thanks

I assume you cleaned out the pump......anyway, 2 months old, you should still have a warranty

5 years on both the pump and I believe the controller....so maybe just the controller went bad.....

Hi there, I’m new to the hobby to be honest but I pulled off the front cover, undone 2 clips and pulled off cover, magnetised I assume propeller on a shaft and put them all in citric acid food grade for 2 hour, scrubbed and put together and now it won’t work continuously just dies, appreciate I have warranty but they don’t move quickly and it’s weekend :(

If you’re worried about your tank, you can get battery power air pumps and air stones inexpensively at sporting goods stores, they use them to keep baitfish alive. You want to keep the water moving so you get good gas exchange.

Iv put the speed up of my wave makers at the surface, put heater in tank with sensor, moved my biospheres into the tank also, it’s 1am in uk sadly so nothing open :(

as long as you have motion within the tank, you will be ok for awhile.....just keep an eye on ammon levels as you dont have any real filtration (unless you have skimmer?).....

Thanks, I’m 2 month into my cycle too ammonia etc is already present, I do have skimmer but it’s in sump, if all fails I will just have to buy another pump tomorrow at least I will have a spare for future problems

It should't take months to cycle a tank, how are you cycling this tank?

It depends on what size your tank is; larger tanks use larger plumbing!

Your best bet here is to use flexible tubing from the new pump to your pre-existing (metric dimensions) Red Sea rigid plumbing, assuming you can’t bring a section of the plumbing in with you when you go to purchase a backup pump!

Keep in mind that this second pump can be nice to have around to run accessory equipment, mix saltwater, or just use as a utility pump to avoid having to carry buckets!

All reefers absolutely should have a backup return pump on the shelve. always.

With the pump unplugged, I’d would clean your connections while they are facing down with Distilled Water, make sure they are totally dry. You can use a Hair Dryer on low. Also your controller to pump connectors, after you screw it down, unscrew the the nut and check that the connector is fully seated. One of my 24 DC Pumps it is possible to put the Volute “the cover over the impeller” together wrong, and it will turn, putting the impeller slightly out of alignment.

I bought the 2 cheap Jebao’s, instead of the expensive Red Sea. Its the life of our system.

I’m not one to buy into the Brand name stuff. It’s likely made in the same place, just a better looking box.

5 years later, one still in the box. If I need another Amazon will have it at my door tomorrow.

I heard about that from the Red Sea stockist I got my replacement from, the guy couldn’t recommend that pump enough, it’s certainly got me searching into it

I have a total of Five Simplicity Pumps, they are the easiest pumps to take apart and do my twice yearly cleaning. No tools needed to take apart, simple brushing, reassembly and back in to pumping. Also I like the 10 minute auto feed off, and the slow ramp back up. The only thing I had a hard time with was the pumps fitting. It was a British Standard Pipe Thread. (PVC Female Socket x BSPT) Only place I found them was on McMaster -Carr.
