Agreed, you want to keep your pre-filters in good shape, so your membrane last longer, even if you still have 0 TDS. Of course if you have above 0 TDS, you can try to change it sooner. Also if you don't get 0 TDS, and you use Deionization resin, you should look at that too. Last to change use to be the membrane.

Okay so start with changing carbon and sediment and go from there correct?

You need a TDS meter to test the water after the filter to know when your cartridges need to be replaced. Honestly, it's almost certainly your DI media that will be exhausted before the other three, but you don't know unless you test the TDS 🙂

I test TDS today and it said 4ppm. I also use my tds meter to test my saltwater as well so it could be some contaminants on it because it also says 3 sometimes or maybe just things from the air since it sat out for like a hour. But I still think it’s time to change so I bought a carbon cartridge and inline sedement

The site says every 6 months or 1,500 gallons I change mine every 6 months and put tape with date on them If you have an RO meter it will tell you telling by colour change unreliable . Both the DI resin , and the RO meter are on Amazon in bulk

I don't think it's necessary to test the TDS of your saltwater, just use the probe for your RODI water 🙂

In general, the first three stages of an RO filter take the source water down to 3 or 4 TDS or so. It's the final DI stage that takes 3 or 4 TDS water ands makes it zero TDS water, which is what you're looking for.

You're not wrong to try to change your carbon and sediment filters, that's fine. But I have a feeling that when you check your water again, you'll still be looking at about 3 or 4 TDS. I think to get to zero you may want to look into changing out the DI resin, but start with what you ordered, and see how it goes.

Thank you if it’s still not 0 after these new filters then I know! Will my water be toxic if I use the RO I am currently getting ?

Probably not, but unless you know what exactly it is that's giving you a higher than zero TDS measurement, nobody can say "yes" or "no" with absolute certainty.

Agreed, it's probably OK, but it's not ideal, and without knowing exactly what those 3 or 4 TDS are, no one can say for sure. For example, if it's 3 or 4 TDS from the copper in your pipes or some other contaminant, then that could be an issue.

Yup agreed, just a reminder, carbon block can be a bit tricky, it doesn't help at all in TDS measure, but it will stop other contaminants like chlorine into your water, so i always try to change carbon block as the manufaturing says, unless you measure chroline

Well it seems like a lot of sediment!
Pretty scary for 6 months , I certainly am not eager to take a mouthful of water. As I said . They are upgrading our water treatment plant to deal with the growing population of whiny big city transplants that want to change everything..... So interested to see if they are improving the treatment or not, That will be proof positive rather than ask a politician for an answer lol. I wish Lassie , or Randy Mr. Farley would respond Lassie did it for a living.
