Do you have any idea what was stored in it beforehand?

That is, was it water soluble, or not?

If unsure, you can always start by filling it with tap water and letting it sit overnight/ draining next day, to see if whatever was in it is indeed water soluble!

What "fragrance?" Did it have something else in it?

Bleach is a great destroyer of organics, so perhaps bleaching the barrel will calm the smell?

If it smells like gasoline, the I would toss the barrel.

Honestly smells like soap, so if i fill with rodi and bleach let it soak overnight. Empty rinse again should be good?

It may take numerous rinses.. hot water will help!

I'd be a bit leery of using any sort of container that had a previously unknown substance in it.

No good reason to do the cleaning and rinsing with RODI. Especially if you're adding bleach. These plastic barrels are common everywhere now because of the rise in drive through car washes everywhere. They get most of the cleaners in bulk in them. I've used these before and they rinse out fairly easily. The fragrance however... not so much. That takes a loooong time to go away. I wasn't too concerned with the smell though - no ill effects I could see in the long run - YMMV.

Good part is that every water change makes everything smell soo good and the wifey very happy!😄😉
