Regarding the Alk/Ca test kits....

When reading the results, am I concerned with the amount of reagent I've used, or how much is remaining in the syringe? The way I read the directions, it appears that whatever remains in the syringe is the reading. But it also seems I get variable amounts of air in the syringe, making it difficult to read.

you are reading the amount left in the syringe. In the picture instructions it shows a picture of the there being 0.96 ml of reagent. So I draw exactly that much into the syringe regardless of where the stopper is. You have to really push the tip onto it to get a good seal.
