So I only add Rodi Water to make up for Evaporation. I was going to do a Water change but I neglected the tank too long doing other projects. When I looked the sump return chamber was almost empty so I added about 2 gallons of Rodi. Just because I checked the Salinity it was 1.028. I need advice to stop this to me strange result please # reefsquad

Uhh, Are you adding RODI saltwater? Because you need to add FW if you want to counteract evaporation. (You prolly know that, I just dunno what the problem would be other than that)

This might sound stupid, so forgive me. Are you topping off water with the same bucket you mix saltwater in? I one time used a bucket i previously mixed saltwater in and forgot to rinse it out and it caused my salinity to go up.

This would be correct to offset high salinity but also assure you are not getting false readings ( calibrate unit).
Likely increasing from evaporation

Are you using an ato or doing manual top offs?

I understand the evaporation effect, and my unit is calibrated but after adding 2 gallons of fresh Rodi waiting for over an Hour I expected a better reading. I did not do a reading at the beginning

Please explain why
2 gallons top up means you don’t top if for a day or more. Adding 2 gallons of freshwater causes salinity to drop and shocks coral and fish.

Auto top offs add a few cups of water many times a day as needed. You don’t need to forget it, or remember to do it. Fill a 5 gallon pail under the tank with rodi water and walk away until it’s empty.

Auto top offs should be a requirement for a reef tank just like a light is.

I understand that. The Salinity increased from 1,024 to 1.028 after adding 2 gallons of straight Rodi not dropped

Auto top up does keep salinity stable . You can even do DIY bottle auto top up . Draw a line on the sump when you're levels are ok . When the water line drops below that line you know to top back up to the line . Mi

Yes that is weird any rodi water should alter your salinity should drop . Have you got a hydrometer they are the best thing for a true reading
