Saltwater from ocean work?

Good Afternoon everyone

I wanting to setup my 2nd tank a 75 gal tank
saltwater from the lfs near me is 1.75$ highway robbery

wanted to know what your thoughts were about starting a tank up with ocean water. I've read so many mixed reviews.

Out in CA we're having a planktonic boom including high domoic acid counts. We have access to water from the Scripps Hose in La Jolla and poeple have used it for tanks for years. More people with fish than corals are happy with the results. Corals like reef water, and CA has lots of runoff issues including being the downstream basin for TJ Mexico.

So, yes, but you need to be aware of what your local collection options are.

There are usually a lot of pollutants where natural seawater is redily accessible (near shore), And a lot of fine sand and other fine particles too. The ocean gets turned over enough and has enough volume that corals and fish can still live but you take the seawater you can get to and put it in a closed system it can be problematic.

You can. But unless you live close to a place that collects away from shore, or have a way to collect from far offshore, it's probably not a good idea. A bucket of Instant Ocean that will make enough to fill your tank twice is about 50 bucks.

There are a few folks on here who collect water on your side of the continent. Check the salinity and P & NO3 if you think there might be local issues.

so I have access to taking a boat from work and going out a few miles to where the water is much more/less polluted lol.

the idea of making the saltwater myself is great but i dont have a ro system -_- lol

im so anxious to set it up.
but i dont want to ruin my current setup just for trying to be cheap.

need to compare costs on a setup mixing station and just buying the water from the lfs

Buy a RO/DI system and a box of salt. By the time you do the initial fill and a couple of water changes, you'll be money ahead vs. paying $1.75 a gallon from the LFS.
