Not sure if anyone has done this. But is there a tank setup where there is saltwater section connected to a dry dirt/sandy section? There would be a barrier in between the saltwater and dry section. So that other plants can live and not be contaminated by saltwater.

Another thing is what animals can be near saltwater that is reasonable. Like something small enough.

Just a curious thought. Wondering if anyone else had some input.

I'm quite rusty on reptile care, but I'm not sure if there's many (any?) herps that can be safely kept in or around saltwater, short of those "land" hermit crabs you see at typical pet stores, and saltwater crocodiles 🤪

Likewise, I'm not sure how many terrestrial plants and things you can really grow in a salt-marsh type environment, short of mangrove trees. This is a cool idea for sure, I'm just not sure it's very easy to pull off, which is why you likely don't see a lot of this kind of setup. But it's definitely interesting, I'll follow along to see if anyone has any experience or even any ideas what plants or animals you could keep in such a vivarium 🙂

Good luck with your project!

Yea, I don’t ever see this sort of thing. Would be cool for someone to try it. Other than mudskippers I haven’t seen anyone do something like this before.

Thought of this one on youtube. Don't recall him having any land animals just plants.

This is actually where I found the idea. I thought it was pretty cool but it would be even cooler if I could add other animals on the land portion of things. The plants would need to be sprayed down with Rodi water so that salt doesn’t kill the plants. I haven’t done a whole lot of research on it, but to my knowledge mangroves are one of the only plants that can live in saltwater.

I don’t know much about vivariums but I do know that there are tons of saltwater resistant plants out there. Two that immediately come to mind that may work in this style of setup are Sea Purslane and Railroad Vine. Both are very unique plants with beautiful foliage and flowers. Those are just two that I’m personally familiar with that are native to coastal areas of the south east United States.

Small animals that could be considered are certainly crabs (ghost crabs, hermit crabs) types of semi terrestrial/intertidal snails (beaded periwinkle, nerites) types of semi terrestrial/intertidal amphipods/copepods/isopods, and even small mammals such as beach mice

I got 3, 8ft long pieces of glass. The bottom piece of glass is broken so part of it can’t be used for holding water anymore. I could put it back together and put pvc board on the side where it isn’t holding water. So my thought was to make it half water half land based.
