do you have water flowing yet? I was wondering how the surges work for you? lots of bubbles, not that bad? it seems like a very very economical way to get mass flow.

Yes, there's water flowing and the surges have a few of their own issues that I need to still work on ... more details will follow when I get to that part of the thread update!
 
I LOVE the fact that 3 sides are exposed as well as have a "behind the scenes" area for all the mechanics of the tank. Is the back of the canopy open into the fish room? I'd love to come out a visit you sometime Sara...it would make for a nice drive as long as it's not snowing or full of ice covered roads.

Thanks Nina! I'm not a fan of inwall tanks at all. I think you lose so much hiding 3 sides of the tank and not being able to view it lengthwise!

There is no access from the back except into the overflow boxes.

You are welcome to take a drive out. There will be more to see in April when I get all the fish in and the snow better be gone by then!

I couldn't agree more. Even if there was a fishroom behind the tank, I would never go inwall. Ive been a lerker on your RC thread. Im sorry if its been asked before but do those floating balls in the surge have metal chains connected to them?
 
Here's some details of the fishroom.

As I mentioned earlier, I have a 10'x21' fishroom that is directly behind the new tank.

This is the system that was running tank #2 right after it was set-up. The system for tank #3 will be in the same area, but most of the components have been changed out other than the skimmer.

After tank #2 broke, 3-40 gallon breeders were added on my work bench to hold the majority of the live rock and some fish. A few months ago the actual sump was moved to the other side of the room and the refugium was taken off-line so that I could start to prepare the area for the new sytem.

This photo is the temporary system that was still running until 2 weeks ago on the opposite side of the fishroom. The prop tank on the right is run off another system in the same room:

This is the area where the new system is going back in ... on the right and against the back wall. This is also the new 75 gallon fuge ... which was relocated further to the left to make room for the skimmer on the stand. All the equipment on the left side runs my 92 Gallon corner tank on the 1st floor:

With the area cleared of equipment, I was able to 2-Part Epoxy the floor, seal the area where the wall meets the floor and then add vinyl floor base to keep the water contained to the room and not bleeding out into the carpet ... as that has happened several times:

I totally agree, Thats why my Peninsula tank has an inwall look on one side and a exposed tank on the other showing the two long sides and one short end. Your doing a great job Sara

The tank is recessed 4" into the wall so that the back of the tank is flush to the interior fishroom wall. I still have 26" of viewing area on the sides which is a huge plus.

Yes, the metal chains are still on the balls in the surge tanks. Rod, who built the surges for me, said it was no issue as his have been running for years that way. I already have a bit of rust on them and figure I can replace them with some sort of plastic chain or zip ties if they degrade too much.

Time for some plumbing fun!

Here's the explosion of plumbing parts we got to trip over for weeks, well maybe months, while the build was going on.

I also got creative in regards to running my external skimmer. I did some work on a slop sink tub that is going to house my External H&S skimmer. I had run the skimmer in my sump since I got it because #1. I've had the room in the sump and #2. I'm worried about it flowing over and emptying my tank. I don't have a shut-off system on it and I don't want to mess with adding one either. I started with a full sink and cut it down to about 4" tall:

I planned on having the sink over-hang the sump and having it just drain down into it, but things never go as planned and it is now plumbed into the sump via some spa-flex and a bulkhead. I'll have more photos of it later on in the thread as I think its a neat solution to something that could cause a failure in a system without a shut-off.

Time for an update as the hubby is off snowmobiling and I'm not in Canada!

Here's some updates for you plumbing junkies!

So I was lucky enough to have the "King of H&S" in town to help with plumbing the tank! I told Brian (Fins Reef) I must have signed up for the "Buy 3, Plumb Free" program he ran on H&S Skimmers! It actually just took some home cooking of dinners for a few evening and a homemade Cranberry Pecan pie! Lucky for me he was in town for almost a week in Chicago for business!

I asked Brian for a mermaid shot, but he wouldn't get in the tank for me ... so this is what I got instead!

The first night we hit the local Ace and Lowes to get some additional plumbing parts and I also placed an order online with Savko for items I could not locate. We then drilled the Tamco Sump with 2 holes for return pumps ... one for the new tank being plumbed and the 2nd one for adding my other system online early next year. It made sense adding a 2nd bulkhead and ball valve so that a combined system could be done later on.

Brian then came back a couple nights later and completed the closed loop part of the set-up and ran the return lines to the tank for the 2 surges located above the system. Brian was giving me that look of "put that camera away and get to work"!

The next evening we worked from 5PM until 2AM on the system. Here's some shots showing the overflow lines being done as well and the external skimmer set-up. There are four 2" overflow holes on the back of the external overflow box. The 2 center holes are drilled slightly higher than the end ones and they are for "emergency" usage. I had these added to handle the flow from the surges if the all fire at once as well as having the ability of an alternative flow route if one becomes plugged.

Here's the skimmer being placed. We actually drilled the sump with 2 additional bulkheads on the top area ... one for the Skimmer slop sink to be plumbed into and the other for the refugium to be plumbed into.

Here it is just about completed with the overflow lines. The far left line feeds the skimmer and the rest of the flow goes to the refugium. The line all the way on the right has a scissor valve so that I can adjust the amount of flow going though that line and shut it down to keep more on the far left line if needed. I accidently ordered too many scissor vs. gate valves, so that's why it's being used there ... hopefully it works well! There's another one that controls the flow going to the Fuge vs. the Skimmer as well.

So, at 2AM when we started on the lines for the return pump, we realized that we didn't have all the plumbing parts needed, so we had to stop at that point. Brian was really excited to help me complete the system, but his plane left for home the next morning. He provided me with a parts list and a drawing of what he envisioned for the return set-up and I picked up the parts the next day.

I have to thank my friends for the plumbing job! Brian kept asking me as he was plumbing the tank "Sara, do you think this tank is a bit over-engineered?":squigglemouth:

Gary Parr was kind enough to volunter to help me with the plumbing. We finished up the return part of the system to the tank and the surges. I have no photos of that as Gary kept me busy with the part assembly! He takes way better photos than me, so I'm guessing that's why he kept me busy!

I would add some support to that plumbing. that is a lot of wait to be held up. The bulk heads are not designed to hold weight out like that. That is going to be a great tank.
 
With the plumbing "completed" I could clean up the inside of the tank, peel off the protective film off the inside of the tank and add the adjustable flow lines to the bulkheads. We added 5 bags of sand so that it would settle well with the water that was going to be turned on that morning. I like to have a thin layer of sand so that my rockwork does not become tippy when being added/built. My hubby shot a quick photo of me in the tank before he got caught with the camera!

It took about 7 days to fill the tank and sump before I could start up the return part of the plumbing. The closed loop was running with no issues!
 
Here's the return pump/return piping. I used the garden hose for my waterchanges. I just attach a separate garden hose to it and run it over to my sump pump area and drain.
