SBR (styrene-butadiene rubber): reef safe?

Looking at an MSDS, there is a health listing of "1". It's an aromatic polymer. Any ideas? thanks.

For what?

If you mean for use in a reef tank, it should be fine, health wise, if you wash it carefully first with warm soapy water to remove compounds like mold release agents.

That assumes it is not intentionally impregnated with materials to prevent mildew or metals to make it conducting (hence my reason for asking the purpose). It will almost certainly tell you if those are the case, since they cost money to add.

I have a polypropylene box, open on one side. There will be a sponge wedged into the opening. Opposite the open side, I've drilled a hole. A grommet will secure the output of a submersible pump in the hole. Water will be pumped into the box, and flow out through the sponge.

The grommet is the rubber? That sounds fine. :)
