We cannot decide if our aquarium is cracked which would be earth shattering or if it is a scratch. We use the flipper scraper so we do not know how either would happen. The tank is only a year old. The pattern goes avrosss the entire front but there is not continuous line just a series of smaller ones.

It would take a pretty good impact to crack that glass. I think you would know the instant it happened.

I would suspect scratch, I am very careful with my flipper to make sure I don't get a piece of sand cought up in it.

Scratches kind of look swoopy like that. They're also irregular, like something bounced across the surface.

A crack would not start in the center and stay there. Cracks also have a different shape, they can curve, but go more straight or regular. They move from one weak spot to another, and they go to the edge. It would probably go all the way across the piece or quickly get there. At the edge it would go from one face of the glass to the other. I'm just speaking from experience with cutting glass. I've never had an aquarium crack. Also, cracks leak. Even if there is a lot of pressure holding the pieces water will leak through the tiniest crack.

You have to be careful not to get sand and stuff between your cleaner and the glass. There might even be tiny sand bits stuck to the glass. If there is a metal edge it can get burrs on it.
