Scratched Star Fire glass

Hi Folks,

I currently use a magnet cleaner and Kent Marine metal scrapper to clean algae and Coraline growth off my glass. I've notice a couple of fine scratches and was curious which instrument is the guilty party and appreciate any suggestions on safer ways to clean the glass.

Did you drag your mag cleaner near your sand bed? If you get some sand / shells in between it than it can scratch it.

Thanks, yeah I do try to avoid that but will definitely be much more careful in the future. So the metal scrapper is best used close to the sand then use the mag cleaner every where else?

The softer coral sand particles are usually not capable of scratching the glass but there is almost always ferrous pieces of basalt present that are picked up by the magnet and are much harder than the glass. A great preventative aid is to use a decent size Neodymium magnet attached to your tongs/forceps and rake your sand bed with it, extra thoroughly along the edges. Thanks Todd, I have a old magnet from one of glass cleaners I no longer use so I'll try dragging it through the sand to pick out the basalt!
