I wasn't going to rant about my LFS but thinking about what they did I need to let it out. I have been going to the same LFS for about 5yrs now to support them and have sent numerous people there. About 8 months ago I broke down my 40B and gave them about 40lbs of live rock, at least 25 different corals, and an assortment of crabs, snails, and fish. In all it was probably around 800-1000 dollars worth of stuff. In turning in this stuff we agreed that he would give me $300 worth of credit (still had freshwater tanks up) to buy stuff. In the last 8 months I have only gotten a $30 aquaclear filter and a cheap heater probably around $20. So in my head I still had $250 left. Well I decided that I was going to set up my 40B again (im hooked on reefs!) and all I was going to ask for was 2 bags of live sand (20lb bags) and a good heater and tell them the credit was done. Well to my surprise as I brought everything up to the counter he looked at me and told me I only had $20 worth of credit!! I couldn't believe this clown! Well things got heated and I told him I would no longer support his store. What I dont understand (especially in this economy) is that your gonna risk losing a customer that has spent hundreds if not thousands in his store over 2 bags of sand and a heater?? what the heck has this world become?
Sorry for the long story but had to rant.... (off to have a few beers) :sure:

Sorry this happened, but I have seen this all to often and experienced it myself! Before I was the owner of this site I was going to help a "buddy" of mine sell some corals on line. He was hurting and I wanted to help. After it was all said and done, behind my back he accused me of stealing corals. I sold on ebay for him, took pics, made listings, kept detailed records and even shipped the coral only to find out about the back stabbing. To beat it all I even paid some of the ebay fees and never took a dime from him.

Oh well you live and learn and I have since turned down "buddies." LOL! I forgive him though.

I forgive him though.

Isn't that in your job description Rev ?

The LFS I work at is really fair. We work with people all the time with issues like this, a consistent customer lost his Gift Card which he has from bringing in coral with about $300 worth on it, the owner said bring me a few of your home brewed beers and we'll call it good. haha I thought this was funny. They are good acquaintances though.

Right on man! We all should! HA! Can't be forgiven if I don't forgive.

What shocks me as well is that they sit there and complain how slow their business is!! well duh... you screw people over!
**** not enough beers in the fridge.....

Sorry to hear. In retail I am a firm believer in the saying, " A happy customer tells 1 or 2 people about their experience, an unhappy one tells anyone that will listen." I would let everyone in your area know.

but, at times a poor LFS is better than no LFS at all... just food for thought...
but yeah, shady stores suck... I have had my share of problems with a store in town over an hdtv I bought from them, a local place not a chain... fortunately there are chains and other options.

Same kinda thing happened to me.I have a landscape business and have about 7 customers with tanks.I turned them all on to my local guy and in the end he screwed me.Well needless to say he lost me and my 7 customers as his customers because I steered them to the other local store. So for a total of 8 people who used to spend anywhere from a 100 to 300 a month on coral I wonder was it worth it?

I also had a similar experience with one of my local LFS, well here it's my rant I was going to buy a BK Skimmer from an online vendor but this guy said I will give u a better deal, (this is a $2000 dollar skimmer and he only saved me like $70 bucks when I could gotten a better deal online but I wanted to give him the buisness) he was just starting out his store so I said ok, I even went to help him out to unload his show tanks for his store, it takes me about an hour from my house to get to his store so is a long drive for me, So his store closes at 7:30 pm so right after work I tried my best to get to his store at a decent time so I got there around 6:30pm I started looking around when this guy came up to me and told me you got to leave in a very rude way, it was not even 7pm when he closes at 7:30 so he pretty much kick me out of his store without any reason, I won't support a LFS that lacks of customer service.

Most of our LFS are good with the exception of one. He is very rude and arrogant and makes people new to the hobby feel like idiots if you didn't consult him before making a decision.

I used to work for an idiot LFS owner in Orlando (NOT WWC they are AWESOME!!) and the owner screwed one of our employees over. He had ordered a chiller so the owner said they would give him a good price since he worked for them and once the owner found out his mother was buying it for him for christmas they jacked the price up for his mom. I quit shortly after and never went back.

The truth is although there are a lot of ****** LFS's the quality LFS's are starting to come about more and more. So those bad LFS's will slowly choke unfortunately wasting awesome livestock in the process b/c most dont know what the heck they are doing.

I completely agree about LFS's going down hill... Every time I stepped into mine I was always saddened that they got a fresh batch of bubble tip anemone's in and of course a week later they were either dead or extremely bleached. And if I said anything to him he had the balls to tell me I didn't know the process of anemone's acclimating to their tank!!! lol (hence I NEVER bought a bubble tip from them)
