Selcon and microbubbles

I recently started feeding freeze dried mysis soaked in selcon. I have an HOB protein skimmer and have had no issues with it in a year and a half but recently I have had a lot of micro bubbles and it seems like the timing coincides with my switch to selcon.

Anyone else have this issue or is it just a coincidence and maybe something else is up?

Can you tell where the microbubbles are coming from? If it isn't overflowing at the top of the skimmer, I suggest that you check all of the fittings and plumbing connections in and around the skimmer as well as the return line. Good luck!

they are coming from the output of the skimmer into the tank, the bubbles that go up the neck into the cup are essentially gone and it’s just a bunch of small bubbles that don’t climb the neck and eventually just get put back into the tank.

It seems to be behaving normally again so I am assuming it is the selcon causing the issues, maybe I’ll use a little less next time and see if it helps

Interesting. How long has the tank been running? How long has it been since you cleaned the skimmer? A new or freshly cleaned skimmer reacts differently than one that has a layer of biofilm.

The tank is over 2 years old, the skimmer is a year and a half, I emptied the cup a couple days ago but it’s been a week or so since I cleaned the neck…this will occasionally happen for a few hours if I clean it really well but I’ve never had it just randomly happen before
