Just for the sake of discussion - is it taboo or genius to sell vendor gift cards you were given?

Personally if I’m planning to buy 300$ of coral from a vendor, and someone offered me $150gc for 75 or even $100…win win for both of us. really don’t care how they got it as long as it’s legit and saving me money in the end

I think a gift card has real value. I have and would buy/sell/trade with them.

There's sites online that will buy a valid gift card at some reduced value, and give you the cash in exchange. So if you're well-meaning Aunt Sylvia gave you a $200 gift card for JoAnn Fabrics, and you really want to get some frags instead, you're in luck, though you give up a small percent of the gift card's value.

I recently traded some used gear I had to another R2R member for Best Buy gift cards. Yes, they were legit gift cards, and yes I do have them. I'm tucking these away for the MacBook I hope to purchase soon :)

If it's something you don't plan on using, selling them is genius.
If you got them as a gift and the person who gave them to you asks about them you could say that you've already spent them or they expired.

I’ve sold a few when I knew I wouldn’t use them, and it worked out fine. Just made sure to be honest about the value and payment method.

I’ve actually been in a similar spot trying to figure out what to do with extra gift cards. I work with a corporate gifts supplier singapore, and sometimes we end up with unused or extra cards from bulk orders. Selling or trading them has come in handy more than once, especially when we don't need that many on hand or clients change their preferences last minute.
