Hello Everyone,

I am setting up a 45G Reef Tank, I have been reading & watching videos how to get started but I ended having more questions then answers.

I've purchased a Fluval 45G bow tank, it comes with ,I only changed the filter to 70G canister filter.

  • 45 US Gal. / 170 L Glass Aquarium
  • Aquarium Canopy
  • Powerful, energy-efficient LED Strip light (8000K, 1470 lumens)
  • Fluval C Power Filter that is powerful, quiet and simple to use <<<<repalced by 70G Canis
  • Fluval M Submersible Heater
  • Fluval Tropical Fish Flakes
  • Fluval Water Conditioner
  • Fluval Biological Enhancer
  • LCD Thermometer that accurately displays water temperature
  • Soft 10 cm (4”) mesh fish net
  • Quick and easy set-up Care Guide that includes valuable tips on caring for your fish.
  • Complementary Aquarium Cabinet available (#15768, sold separately)

It was only 400(Canadian$) for the everything above which was pretty good deal.
I will be buying a Power head or two with a RO DI unit in the coming weeks, since I don't plan starting in a month or so. Probably will buy a skimmer after couple of months

These are the questions I have for starting :

-When choosing Rocks (i know it controversial sub): Does it matter if i get dry or live rock ?
What would you recommend for someone who's getting into reef tank.
* I hear pro's & con's for both have mixed feeling but dry rock is apparently cheaper but take time to "bloom".
*If i choose dry rock, do i have to put some type of bio product ( I plan on using live sand regardless of the type of rock.)
*If i buy either of theme from a store , do I have to Cure theme ?

-When i start my Cycle , do i have to put the filter in ?

-At the end of the cycle : How many cleaners should i introduce @ start ?
*I plan on getting pair of clowns, should i introduce theme same time as the cleaners ?

Thank you in advance !

As far as the dry or live rock debate, dry rock is nicer because you don't have any hitchhikers or potential unwanted pests. What I did for my tank was started out with 90% dry rock and 10% live rock to seed the dry rock (this you can just buy a couple small pieces from your local fish store). Dry rock is cheaper than live, and if you order it online it doesn't have to be rush shipped so you also save money in shipping. Get a bottle of biospora or some raw shrimp from the grocery store to start your cycle. And test regularly to see how your cycle is progressing. Once your cycle completes you can get your clean up crew, and slowly add fish in :)

Look into Caribsea Life Rock. I highly recommend it. Its manmade, infused w/ good bacteria, and has awesome color. Also cheaper then live rock. I bought 2 boxes of the rock (40lbs each) and 1 box of the shape (20lbs) and had pkenty left over for my 45 gallon. Only needed 60lbs really.
