Hello everyone. I bought a nuvo xr60 used. Came with a radion xr30w and a mini skimmer. I'm wondering if I should try and get a refugium up for it. It has a small overflow built in (see pic) so could I put some macro alge in there or should I get a small tank and use that. Also what light should i use for the refugium? Any help would be appreciated. I sent want to go all out on the tank and get all the bells and whistles you can get because the budget doesn't allow that right now.

So, will this be primarily a fish set up with minimal corals? The need for a refugium would generally be dictated by what you are planning on keeping. Since you are just starting out, you likely are going to be primarily fish with a few softies and LPS's and some zoa's. If this is the case, I don't see the need for a refugium... yet. Your system can grow or expand based on the inhabitants you keep. I'm speculating here...

Yeah some corals but more fish than coral.
I wouldn't worry about a refugium then. You can always add it later as you and your system grows. Keep it simple, eliminate unnecessary points of contention and enjoy the hobby.

Hi Kris and welcome to R2R!

It’s up to you whether you have a refugium and as said above, it depends on what your going to keep.

If your mainly fish, then you might get away with it but your still going to need to decide on how to remove waste/nutrients from the system (phosphate/Nitrate) or your going to have major algae problems.

If you can get one it will be well worth while as then you have many more options to control everything. You may be able to get away with some media in the rear of the tank if the budget is tight.

I am a doing my first build and have been looking into this a lot. With space a concern I think you will get much more value from an algae scrubber. Also it will provide a refuge for pods. As you are on a budget (like me) this is the one I am thinking of getting but I haven't seen much feedback about them:

My view is that this should be perfect for you (I am thinking of getting one too for my larger tank and hanging it off my refugium - having both means different types of algae and should mean broader export - plus the algae scrubbers tend to ramp up faster and you don't need to buy algae for them).

The scrubbers that a lot of people use (like CJ Aquariums) are http://www.santa-monica.cc/
@samparker has amazing tanks and he uses one of the floating ones (I think someone in his long video tour of all his tanks) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzOt-6XT6BN_MbmDjW07UQQ

So for you - if you have the space I would look at the HOB but Santa Monica should have a really good option for you that can simply slide in there.

Whatever you decide I think it will be really beneficial for your tank - I hope it helps and if you get one let me know what you think ;)

I do use one on my clown harem tank. Mainly as it has no sump but a large bio load. I also have a larger surf (the biggest they make) in a friends tank that I maintain and boy, does it produce a bunch of algae!
