Anyone have any ideas on how to make my canopy fans come on when the tank hits a certain temperature...short of buying a controller?

you can use a timer and guess about what time each day the lights heat up the tank and set the timer to go on at that time.If you are like me and keep your temps in the house at 70 year around it works well.

Steve- I had plans for a temp controlling circuit, but I cant seem to find them right now. It isnt too hard to build a little 9-12V circuit that can flip a relay on to turn them on/off at a desired temp.. I will get back to you when I'm back at work tomorrow.. I may be able to help you...

You can buy them on marinedepot they are Ice Cap variable speed fans. They are fairly intelligent the only down side is that they are $50 a pop.

I just run my fan into the same timer I use for the lights, then just adjusting fan speed depending on how warm everything is.
I too dream of a controller...one day.
