Should we try to save this Naso?

So I just came back from the LFS where I saw this beautiful Naso tang, Perfect size for my system and looked really good, not too skinny, swimming actively, everything looked great until I noticed these tiny little black specs on it (black ich?).

As soon as I got home I started doing research on black ich and it seems like it wouldnt be too hard to get rid of.

I really want to try and save this fish, Do you guys think it would be possible or should I just let the fish die at the LFS?

I would really like to know what everybody here thinks...

What if you inform the lfs of the parasite and let them qt it for you?

I did tell them about it, but I don't think they will do anything to help the fish since the girl that works there said they had that same black stuff in the same tank a couple of weeks ago and it killed a few fish. That is what made me feel bad for this Naso and since I had already decided that I wanted to keep a Naso in my tank, I feel like I should probably try to save this one since black ich doesn't sound too scary.

I wouldn't support a lfs with those kind of practices!

If its a rescue mission you're after than by all means, go for it! I would definitely talk to them about discounting it since you will have to treat and its just going to die in their care. Good luck!

I might have to ask for the discount but more than anything, do you think it is possible to rescue him since I will have to dip him in freshwater after being bagged and taken for a car ride? Or would this be too much stress for it to handle?

Well, personally I wouldn't buy a fish I knew already has parasites. There's a chance you can't rescue it, and a chance you can. I'm sure having the parasites its already stressed, as are all the other fish with it. I wouldn't see the difference between adding a car trip to the mix.

So I just went to the LFS and I spotted a few white spots on the fish (ich), the owner was there, he caught me looking at the Naso and he asked if I wanted to take it home. I told him that I wasn't sure because of the black and white ich and he went ahead and fed him to see if he was eating, and the Naso ate very well. After that he said he was going to treat him and put him on hold for a few days which sounds pretty good to me.

I guess we'll see how he's doing in a few days from now and I will bring him home if he's doing better.

That's great! Maybe he will put the tang on hold for until the ich completely falls off.

Hi guys!! I picked up the Naso from the LFS two days ago and have been treating for ich, he seems to be responding very good to the treatment, he is eating well and getting pretty vibrant coloration. I can still see a couple of spots on him but overall he is doing great I think. Here you have a couple of pictures from last night.

He is actually in the QT but my coral frags are there because I was battling dinoflagellates in the DT and my corals were looking really bad so I moved them to the DT and are doing great now. I am treating with Ich attack by Kordon which I have used before for treating my yellow tang, blue hipo tang and coral beauty, all at different time and I have always had great results with it and this time is doing the trick again. The tang is almost 100% better and it has had no negative effects on my corals or invertebrates (I have hermits, snails and anemones in the same tank).

How long are you planning to leave him and the corals in qt? I had ich get into my main tank and kill about $300 worth of fish.

The fish will stay in QT for at least 2 weeks after the last white spot falls off and the corals will remain in there for a minimum of 8 weeks with no other new creatures being introduced to the QT.

Hopefully that will be long enough to let the ich parasite die out.

The Naso was doing good up until yesterday when I noticed his stomach was a little pinched and he wasn't eating very well, today he won't come out from behind the rock work. Is there anything I can do now?
