Switching out my 46 bow (for sale/trade) for a corner thank, prob a 54 gallon with sump. Show me your corner tank setups!

Always ran hob stuff but id like to do the sump thing. Are most drilled thru back? It's going in a living room corner to open the room up and make room for our baby girl on the way. My friend has a aquavim and it's drilled thru the bottom I believe and super quiet.

Here's mine. It's about a 70g. It's a custom built tank that my LFS tore down from another customer (a DR office) and was selling second hand. I picked it up cheap compared to what it would have originally cost. It's a 36" tank on 36" stand. So it's a bit taller then most corner tanks. The back sides are only 24" deep though. So the overall space doesn't really allow for a decent sump inside. So I couldn't put the sump under so it's actually behind the tank. The tank is about 16" from the back wall for room for the sump tank. I wish I had a way to use the sump I had and have the tank completely in the corner against both walls.

Originally this tank was setup as a FOWLR using a sealed loop canister filter system underneath. But I wanted to go with a sump so I changed a few things with the way it was plumbed. The tank itself has always sort of bin a work in progress. I've had it for a bit over a year now. Currently there is a HOB overflow that goes down to the 15g sump. I have two powerheads in the tank. There's some DIY (LED floods) lights currently on it but I just ordered my first decent lights for it (ReefBreeders) so I can't wait to get that unit on top and play more with some beginner corals. There's a skimmer in the sump along with another 8-10lbs of LR in there too.

I look back now and I really don't like the tank all that well. It's not suited as a reef tank for a small house with no where to plumb the rest of the workings to because it defeats the purpose of a corner tank to have something behind it. And most importantly it's way too tall. It's a nightmare when I have to do tank maintenance that involves anything in the tank. I think for me a shorter tank and one with deeper back walls that can accommodate a sump underneath would have been a whole lot better. I think I would rather put something like a Red Sea Max 250 or something similar in that space. But for now it's what I have and I'm going to keep trying to improve in it the best I can.

What do you run as a filter CGinter?

A Fluval 406 canister. 5g weekly wc.


Canisters will work fine, as long as you keep up on the maintenance/cleaning.

I do want a sump and get rid of this canister, so I can have a good skimmer and reactors, but All my money goes to the big tank unfortunately.

I had a emperor 400 and think a canister would be more ideal. Frickin algae outbreak clogs the filter inlet too lol

How much room do you leave between rear and sides to wall?

I'm using Fluval Sea Full Spectrum Marine & Reef LED light and they siting on my baby toys lol for know... I'm looking to get the ecotech lighting and star coral....
