How often do they puff? Mine does periodically, and it seems to go in spurts

I had a stars and stripes many years ago that I was shocked one day when I saw him puffed floating across the tank. I then saw it again, I never saw anything going on and my water quality was good. It ended up actually the beginning of the undulated triggers rampage and assault against the other tank inhabitants. The undulated was removed to a large public aquarium and I never saw the puffer puff again, he lived with me for many years.
