This purple pincushion urchin was a surprise gift from BF. I've only had it two days. We don't have any history on it from the LFS because he didn't ask...

Upon acclimation (went right into DT no QT), I didn't like how some of its pins looked but unknown if it was manhandled before/during shipment to LFS. I gave/give it Ocean Nutrition Formula Two bunch of medium sized pellets (because they sink), just in case it was malnourished before arriving.

This evening I noticed this red line on my pincushion... SO:
- should I be worried?
- is it sick ?
- is it actually a skinny lined tuxedo urchin (NOT pincushion)?
---- did not observe any red lines upon introduction to tank 2 days ago

Its all the way in the back of my tank. Lights are already cycling down and my AI director is not liking me. Shot this using my iPhone thru my 'reef' glasses to try and control blues, but I'm also zoomed all the way in on urchin.

My water parameters as of yesterday:
ph - 8.0
nitrate - 5
salinity - 1.025
phosphate .25
calcium - 440
magnesium - 1500
alkalinity - 11
temperature - 78.4

EDIT: how that picture looks on my monitor is pretty close to how it looks to my naked eye, so that might be best possible photo (go me)

I'm not sure what the red line is, but I can tell you that mine was fine for months and then dropped a bunch of spines, I started feeding it nori and it bounced back fast.
I don't know whether they drop spines in response to stress, but I suspect that they do.
Good luck with that beautiful specimen!!!

The band you see is associated with its venom line. The only issue is starvation in most cases and as stated, Slowly their spines come back.
Assure water quality requirements are met as well as dietary
