Looking to purchase an external skimmer. I do not have a sump, so looking at external. Not familiar with them. I have only had in-sump skimmers. Any advice? Recommendations?

tank size and bioload?

90 gallon. Maroon clown pair, sailfin tang, 4x lemon chromis, 4x azure damsels, six line wrasse.
Largest oase canister, carbon reactor, phosguard reactor, uv. Auto water change 10% weekly.

running an external skimmer will be really hard then. they are mostly for sump tanks. if you ran one under the level of the tank you risk overflowing water onto your floor. i dont ever recommend canisters for reef tanks as it is more work and gives you less room for expanding filtration

hob skimmer is your best option but again it comes with the risk of overflowing and ruining your floors

Now you have me more curious. I have the ability to run it above the level of the tank. All of my filtration is plumbed to the garage so nothing is in the house. It is possible to have the external skimmer above the level of the tank.

ok that changes things. reef octopus is my go to but if you can make it work lifereef skimmers are really soo good

I used this in my previous 120 gallon reef. It ran for 2 years no issues.
