Hi Guys.
I've had seahorses for a while (on and off for about 15 years) and have successfully raised some fry to adulthood. Strange surprise today: I was cleaning my sump around noon and after I put everything back together and fired up all the pumps and powerheads, I noticed a few fry swimming around. The unusual part is they don't normally give birth mid-day, and the stranger part is there are only 20-30 of them instead of hundreds!

Anyone know why? I've never seen such a small batch nor ones born in the middle of the day.

Bumping your post!

Could something have eaten a portion of the fry early on?

Or maybe it's a survival strategy changing the size of the spawns according to factors like temperature and other environmental factors?

Not possible anything ate them.... it was mid-day where the tank is in my view and I noticed as soon as he started expelling. Interesting tought on the survival strategy. I'm thrilled that they are all still alive and thriving!

I've had this. I used to have a male that when we was really stuffed he'd release a small number a day or two earlier than the others.
That's what I thought - they were warning births, but no more followed after that. Two different males released about 20 each a few days apart. (shrug)
