Snails taking over my tank!!

Does anyone know how to stop snails from reproducing and how to get rid of them? I started with two hitchhiker snails and then they reproduced and theres at least 500 of them all scattered around my tank and on the glass. Ik it's a good thing to have free clean up crew but this is too much.

You can offer them to local reefers and shops, manually remove them when you find them, and/or get a fish/invert that eats snails.

Do they mostly come out at night? If so, they are likely collonista snails and won't get any bigger. They are a great cuc and don't generally cause any problems.

It will likely pass when the tank reaches some sort of equilibrium.

Also, their population will depend on their food source. If you have a lot of film algae on the glass and rocks they are likely to stick around. You can add competitors like copepods to try to reduce the available food source for the snails.

Typically, collunista snails bloom during the early 'ugly phase' when algae are abundant up to maybe a year or two, then the population will decline substantially when the tank matures.

The only problem that I know of with them is that they can get into clearance spaces of pumps and other mechanicals (I had to create a 'shield' on my rotating flow device to keep them out).

Ive had my tank for around 3 years now and had the problem recently and yes they've caused my wavemaker to stop mulitple times and thats whats annoying me

Wrasse 'em all.

I had a green coris.

In a given day, I was at the beach and I collected a couple snails do cuc.
And guess what. Wrasse thought they were all food lol

That's my suggestion. Follow the course of the nature.

My sixline doesn’t bother snails, crabs or shrimp you’ll probably need to look elsewhere.

I have a melanurus wrasse who eats almost any snails I try to add to the tank (he's even flipped and eaten 4 giant turbo snails). It's actually really frustrating, lol. So unless you want a snail killer on your hands for a long time, you may want to try something else other than a fish.
