I’m not sure if this should be here or in the lounge but…

I thought it might be a good idea to make a list of those of us who have YouTube channels, Instagram, TikTok etc. It could help people get noticed and it could help people find channels that focuses on subjects they care about.

I have a channel that, due to some life issues over the last several months, I haven’t posted content on in a while but tomorrow I’ll be posting more regularly.

My YouTube channel is called Perseverance Reef. My niche (focus) is budget reefing. Of course I also discuss reefing in general and give updates on my system. I only have a YouTube channel for now but I might do a TikTok channel eventually. Maybe even a Flip channel!

Please feel free to post your channel(s) and what your niche is. I’d love to check out your channels too! Who knows? Maybe we could even collaborate with each other sometime!

I'm on IG and YT as @Fishstyx_reef.

I haven't posted much on YT in a minute, but there's some good stuff in the works there. My IG is assorted reef content and shenanigans.

Shenanigans are fun! Go #Heathens!

Okay, lol, I'm going to be completely honest, I think that some of my content is (and will be) very cringe. This is mostly because I'm following the weird trends on social media to try to catch views. I never knew you could keep a salt water aquarium until one day I scrolled on a YouTube short that was about reef tanks, and the rest is all history. I'm trying to do the same for other people, since most don't know about the hobby or that our coral reefs are dying. If you want to check it out, it's called Walkers Reef. I'm telling you though, it's cringe. Don't judge 🤣

Edit: don't expect me to be doing all that dancing stuff lol.

Mine isn’t exactly the best that’s ever been although I’m always looking for ways to make better quality content. I need to work on my confidence in general. I’m getting there though.

Hey, you're already better than me. I'm terrified to put my face or voice in a video. That'll probably never happen lol.

Some of those were pretty decent album covers

Don’t be hard on yourself! I bet your voice is fine! My problem is that I had a brain bleed about 10 years ago. It’s hard for me to say what I’m thinking sometimes. The words are on the tip of my tongue but I can’t get them out for a brief time so it makes for dead air. If you check out my channel you’ll see what I mean.

I’m going to try to fix a laptop I have that would be perfect for my channel. Now that I actually have the time to do it (and to make new content) I’m going to move forward with it. I bet it would help with confidence building and video quality.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Honestly, I didn’t even notice anything like that when watching your videos. I know that if I record without a script, I sometimes struggle to get my words out too. Scripts really help me with that. Have you ever tried using one?

Yes and they help! I just need to get better at reading from it while looking into the camera.

FWIW, here is my advice for those starting a hobbyist yt channel:
(And yes, these are all MY words, lol!)

Just be yourself.
Talk to your camera like another Reefer. Remember, it’s not live (unless it is, lol!), and you are in control. You’ll likely make a lot of mistakes, but it’s okay to do so, they make the video more interesting.

Edit your videos. An awesome tank will look like crap in blue light. Take the time to play around with lens filters and get a good video editing app. Also consider a separate microphone if required.

Have patience. Like Reefing, growing a yt channel takes time. Unless you already have a social following or know someone who does, it may take a year or two to gain traction. Just stay consistent with your upload schedule. I recommend one video a week minimum for at least a year.

Have fun! Don’t do it for any other reason. I’ve thought about quitting a few times myself, but instead found new ways to have fun with it.

Don’t get discouraged! Ask for feedback and apply it to the next video. Continuous improvement makes a huge difference! I like to compete with myself and see if I can make a better video each time.

Learn. Watch videos, read articles, or ask other YouTubers about how it all works. There’s a lot to take in, and you’ll be better off if you learn that sooner.

It’s a lot of work to make reefing yt videos. That work is rarely appreciated out loud. So finding your groove and sticking to it will net you some success over time. How much success is dependent on your level of care and effort.

Likewise! One thing I love is that most reefing channels aren’t trying so much to outdo the “competitors” as much as to outdo themselves.

@Reefer Matt I love the way you present your material. I especially love your authenticity.

@recif.conde I’m going to check out your material before long.

I decided to switch from Canva to CapCut for video editing and thumbnail design. Once I get the hang of it my video quality should improve by leaps and bounds.

Thanks! It’s really easy when you’re not a good actor and just having fun, lol!
I was “Reefer Matt” on R2R before I started a yt channel. I honestly only started one because my sister had a channel and I was curious about it. Plus it’s fun to me.

@Fish Styx, you need to post more! People would die to have a reef like yours!
I'm about to start posting more on my YT channel. I've just been moving some pieces across the chess board first.
