Hey fellow reef enthusiasts! As much as we'd all love to do nothing but have projects revolve around our tanks what are you working on at home, whether it be honey-do or something that's been on your list of get sh#t done?

Finishing the garage here finally... This is a project I hate doing but will love once it's done lol

We just completed a 1000’ run of electric cable and fiber optic cable all laid in conduit. We live to far off the road for the cable company to install, well they would do it, but wanted $18k.

So I did some research and found out what converters and equipment I needed. Talked the cable company into servicing a remote box at the road. This allows us to put our internet modem in this outdoor electronics box, along with an ethernet to fiber converter.

1000’ feet later, in the house, the same Ethernet to fiber converter is used to convert it back from fiber to Ethernet, and then the Ethernet cable is plugged into our router like normal.

Everything works perfect! Final cost of pieces, parts, equipment rentals(trencher,etc), etc, was about $2500, way better than $18K, even though that would have included cable tv as we. My way only allows for cable internet, which is better than the stupid HughsNet satellite internet, which blows!

The satellite internet we would barely pull 10mb download speeds. Now with the mid tier cable internet(490mb’s) we are pulling 500+MB’s on a hardwire from the router. Finally, after 2yrs we can use the internet, haha!

But, that what we get for living out in the woods!

Haha I love it! I'm no stranger to living off the grid, I didn't have internet for twenty years. Tried satellite for a while but it was not a favorable experience for the cost so I dumped it after a couple years. Now I'm back on the grid but I can appreciate how good you must feel for the effort!

With that much bandwith why even contemplate using cable. So easy to stream everything you want for much cheaper and no commercials most of the time.

That’s exactly why I didn’t look much into the coax to fiber converters, plus they are pretty darn pricey.

We are “saving” about $29.99 a month with the local cable internet versus the satellite now. The project will be paid for in about 6.5yrs. Either way, we now have internet that works haha

The wife is just happy she can have her Netflix’s back after 2yrs haha!

i have internet for the first time as well. It is amazing to be able to get online. And they finally fixed my router dropping daily issue and now I have my Apex set up so another toy to tinker with. Enjoy the web surfing!

Just kidding, but those media converters are trash in my experience.. I avoid them whenever possible, but certainly not at a cost of $16K. Just keep in mind that they may need to be power cycled occasionally and keep a spare or two around for the inevitable replacement.

I had both converters and the fiber cable hooked up for 2mths before I broke ground. The wife made me show her it worked haha. So I had it temporarily hooked up to the router while we still only had satellite. During that “testing” time I didn’t have to fiddle with them.

Don't get me wrong, it is a great workaround for your situation and they will work. I just don't think they are reliable long term so I would have a spare on hand for troubleshooting purposes and as a quick replacement.
