I have 2 clowns (Ocellaris and Da Vinci) and they are not mean. At least not yet, but it’s been 3 years. They stay to themselves in their part of the tank and don’t bother me when I have hands in the tank. I like them.

I have 2 Banggai Cardinals. Nice fish, but I find them boring as they don’t do much. I got them initially because they reminded me of the freshwater angels I had as a kid. I’d rather have something more colorful if I were to do it over.

I know you’re kind of looking for 2 fish, but I had a Diamond Goby before and loved him (he jumped). His fun personality made up for not being a real colorful fish.

I'm going to give clownfish another chance because the wife likes them, so do I. I'm going to try and find di vince or snowflake, maybe a black snowflake depending on cost.
Diamond goby is definitely on my list. The last one I had was awesome and I loved watching him do his thing.

Awesome!

I liked having the opportunity to do 2 different types of clowns, instead of 2 fish that looked the same. The Da Vinci’s and their variations are my faves, but they are a bit more expensive. The Maroons look cool, but from what I read - they are the really mean ones.

You can mix designer clown varieties as long as they are the same species. For example I have a Davinci and a Wyoming White - both ocellaris variants - and they paired up. I used to have an orange and a black ocellaris too. Just try to get them when they are small and around the same time.
