Sponge question

My sponge is coming apart or what looks like shedding. Is that normal or is it going to die.
 
Need some pics. Normally when they start falling apart, thats not a good sign. But not for certain until seen.
 
By the time I got home and seen it there is nothing to take a pic of just crap floating around tank. So not happy just done a water change now I am going to have to do it again. What a crapy Monday. Oh yeah and my ac unit in my house broke as well today.
 
Oh boy, Murphys Law is just bustin ya up.
