sps radium experiment

i have noticed with some sps i have gotten be for that the color has changed over a few months...now i have 5 new sps that i am going to see how they change week by week....

i have 250w radiums in a diy luminarc reflector powered by a blue wave 7 ballast....all with in 12" from the top of my 125 on my frag rack thats on the glass....the flow by them is a vortech in pulse mode and is 10" away.

Interesting experiment. Did the frags come from similar lighting? If your lighting and bulb spectrum is different then most likely the sps's will change.

well its the start of week 2 and i have started to see some changes already!! i was shocked to see some new color already...its hard to pick it up with my camera but im trying to do my best :) im starting to see some green on the base of the turaki and the irish gold acro..

in some of the other sps i have seen change..green was the first color to show up...why is that?? i have a red planet and when i put it under these lights it got dark green with red...now its really supper red with little green.

i hope you can see the new colors...ill be taking new pics every monday....kinda like a tv show :) so stay tuned :D

well i dont know what ora uses for lighting but the others came from tanks with 250w 15ks i do beleave

What's the purpose of this experiment?

Have these been recently added to the system? If so it's hard to attribute any changes solely to the lights. It's already known that corals change under different lights and many users are happy with the colors that the Radium bulb promotes. Not to mention that the colors are "off" because of shipping stress.If you're going to test the effects of the bulb itself you need to control the other variables. I'm not trying to bust your balls I just don't understand what your goals are.

2 of these coral are from another from my club and the stress from shipping was from 2 hours away for all 4 of them...2farnorth is the person i got 2 of these from and he is wondering what color they will change to under the radiums also...he is the only one that has the irish gold acro to his knowlage....and every one knows what a blue iris looks like from photos from other people so know i am documenting the changes it will have......i have other sps in my tank that was one color with my 15ks that where on them for over one year and a half...once i put the radiums above them they changed even more like my tricolor nana getting purple tips.
lots of people know what a green milli looks like too....i do....i want to see if it changes colors.....

im just sharing my experience with EVERYONE. sorry if you have a problem with it.

Sorry guys, I don't know why but I read "unhappy" in this quote. TonyB is saying the way I feel as well....I just installed Radiums and like them very much.

I don't need "documentation" to settle some silly internet debacle. Do a quick search of most forums and you'll find the radiums are one of the highest recommended bulbs for coral color. Usually accompanied by recommendations for Phoenix 14k or the occasional XM 20k user.

Guys, sorry, I misread the quote to read "unhappy" for some reason. My Bad. I saw happy users as well in most research I did. Brain fart.

I just installed Radiums on my SPS tank and love them. Changed out EVCs, and with an Apogee PAR Meter was consistently getting 60-80% greater PAR with the 400 watt Radium 20K SEs over the equivalent EVC.

In that picture you posted of the Irish Gold mother, the coral is under 250w Reeflux 10k's... :wink:

I'd really like to see what this coral will color up to under the Radiums.....

Peronally I got better color under the same water conditions with the Reeflux, then the Phoenix 14k.... go figure.....

well i do have another green milli down in my frag tank off the same piece and thats under a 20k 70w halide thats only 6" away from it.

i know i kinda went the wrong way with this but $ is limiting me from doing it the best way.. may be in a year or so when i can get a few frags off each of these ill do a real test of bulb color vs. sps..

but till then ill keep posting updates every monday :)

i found a camera setting that gives a better shot of the color that is more true and not so blue....at least its early in this to FINALLY find that setting :D

but any ways..... color on the irish gold acro is realy turning green still along with the turaki...the milly is going away from the rich green....may because of to much light....i may pull it from this experiment to save the coral...it still has its polyps out so ill give it some time..

well its ben a month :)

the hardest coral to take a pic of is the milli...this time it looks great! and so does the pic :)

for crap$ and grins i tosed in a few other pics too...one is of my ora red planet...granted it looks like a stub...well it is..thats how i got it....but its a bigger stub that what it was 6 months ago :) its finally growing some branches :)

Looking good! Just curious, abouts how far from the bulbs are they located? I seen in the beginning posts that the bulbs were 12" from the surface, or was that the depth of the frags?

I'm waiting for the pink tips of that Irish Gold to come out!!

they are 12" from the bulb...in height in the tank its about 1/2 way....they are not right under the light neather...just off to the side of the glass....those lumenarc reflectors rock...

i would love to see pink tips!

its getting lots of green!
