I want to make a acro dominant tank but I see a lot of people saying wait till your tank is mature to do that. How do I mature a tank if I want to start with acros and let that be the only thing in the tank

You can't try and start with easy SPS like stylos, birdsnest, monti digi, etc...which are typically the first tester SPS corals try in a newer tank.

I think starting off with live rock helps you get ready for sps much sooner than dry rock.

I started mine with kpaquatics liverocks last november, and i'm full with sps frags at the moment. I started adding corals 4 months in. Started with a few easier test sps pieces. Everything has been coloring up and growing nice and I believe it's because of the live rock.

lol it seems like everyone is saying a good live rock. Any tips for hitchhikers?

You can do a high salinity dip for a couple minutes whilst swishing around. Then put back in a holding tank or whatever and observe...then redip. I'm sure others can guide you better. Of course it's always a risk but thr benefits outweigh the cons IMO. for example..I upgraded to a 300 gallon tank from my 125. 125 was packed with acros. Put all new water in the 300 and sent icp in and then matched trace to my 125. Added 15lbs of kp lr...all my old rock from 125 and probably 40 lbs of dry rock. Used new sand (rinsed 5000 times with tap). Transferred all of it over in a day and broke the 125 down...lost one of 200 or so acros. But..I was very diligent on my parameters and testing.

I cured the rock in a seperate container. But I was rinsing them off in salt water with salinity over 1.035. Crabs will jump off the rock. I haven't seen any aiptasia on there rocks. I did get bubble algae. Those I purchased emerald crabs to take off.

I wanted to start my tank with TBS rock but they went on a hiatus when I started my tank. My tank is only sps and it did okay for the first 3 and a half months. I put TBS rock in and my sps look night and day different. My birdsnest is twice as puffy, my stylo used to be really finicky and retract is polyps when anything was disturbed in the tank and now it doesn’t, my monti started growing insanely fast, and acro PE has improved. Its only been in for a week now, but the short term results have been astonishing. Real reef rock I believe is the key to starting off directly with SPS.

What are some easy branching SPS?

This is my first dive into SPS. I have monti cap, stylo, birdsnest and acros. To me they all react the same to issues in the tank. If one is sulking all of them sulk, but the acros are definitely quicker to start bleaching. I would say with exception of a few acros anything that is not an acro is probably a good start.

Start with corals like Hydnophora, Psammocora and Montipora. Don't rush into SPS, there are so many other fantastic corals to experiment with.
Look to LPS like Duncan, Micromussa, Encinitas before SPS.
