I've never built a stand, but I've read a fair bit about them. There is a member on RC - Uncleof6 - who is a tank builder and swears by 3/4" plywood stands for anything up to ~250G.

If you look at the commercially built stands out there, you'll see that virtually all of them are either plywood or 3/4" boards. If my wood working skills were up to it, I'd go wit plywood. Unfortunately, I can't cut a straight line :(

I don't really think it matters how people build their stands. Its completely up to them, but to do it based on wild advice from someone who doesn't really understand structural stress or mechanics is the problem I see.

I would suggest you stop by your LFS and look at the stands they have....they are all plywood stands. I recently help a fellow reefer move his 180 gallon tank on a commercial stand and I was surprised to see how light (and what I thought), flimsy stand. But realize it was engineered to hold all that weight. A 3/4 plywood stand will easily support relatively large tanks.
