Star Polyps

Just wondering if anyone knows why my Star Polyps will not come out?! I have a frogspawn and some pulsing xenia that are doing fine. It seems that some times the star come out only to go back in again...is this normal? this morning I moved them more out of the flow to see if that helps. Any ideas?

Star polyps are really easy to keep happy and they should be in a med-high flow area and in medium to low light. the more you move a coral the more un-happy it will be for longer. And on the note of star polyps I would try to isolate them in the sand bed on a nice large piece of rock if not they will try to grown on everything including other corals. same goes for you xenia. and you can also judge your water quality at a glance with your frogspawn if it is full and happy you doing ok if it is not full and dull test you water.
What are your tank conditions and how long has it been up?

Yup i agree with Steven - Green Star Polyps (GSP) are really tough to kill. I have mine growing on the back wall...they have been exposed to air multiple hours - once on a tank move and another time on a re-aquascape. Both times they stayed closed up for days after everything was put back in. Eventually they opened back up and are growing fine. Give it some time.

I was afraid that I cracked the skeleton when I took it off the disk it was glued to :(

Star Polyps don't have a skeleton. They grow a purple mat called a Stolon. You can peel the stolon back and cut it with a razor or scissors to make new frags when it grows.

I love the look of GSP to cover things up making a nice mat. But the last time I had GSP in my system it just took over, and was very hard to get rid of. I don't think I will risk GSP again.

no there is no polyps bail with GSP and they are really really hard to kill. Isolation is key with GSP

I hear these are almost as bad as xenias lol. Anyhoo I have 3 different types of these. I have some High quality looking ones that have real real Neon green and Very long. I put the 3 next to each other and you can see the difference in Eye catching color. I should post pics lol
