Stinky Sump!

My sump stinks! Yuck! Any way to cut down on the offending oder?? Does your sump stink too?

My sump does but fortunately it is in a separate tank room. When my Ozone is shut off it is far more offensive. Have you tried running a filter sock with carbon?

Haha I recently removed my sock. No real reason except that I got tired of cleaning them-lol. Someone needs to invent disposable ones.
Maybe tossing a bag of carbon in there somewhere's would help.

I think the biggest reason I get that smell of low tide is from my skimmer.

Try emptying the skimmer more often. If you allow it to sit there for a more than a week it gets aweful. I started a new job so I've been real busy. All of a sudden my room just stunk so bad. I emptied the skimmer and it went away

I clean my skimmer cup every 2-3 days :) I get bored while manually dosing so I clean it between doses-lol. Please don't tell me I gotta clean the fuge area too. Getting down that low to the floor is hard enough as it is. The less time I'm down there the better chances I have of getting back up. :)

If your fuge looks full of detritus I'd clean it out. Running carbon will eliminate the water smelling. Also there are carbon pads you can buy. Cut a circle out to fit the top of the skimmer, place ontop of the collection cup. That will help with smells coming out of the collection cup.

If you can put a power head in the sump to suspend waste so the skimmer can pull it out. it may help if there is a dead spot in the sump with the odor, but it will help keep the tank cleaner.

I was thinking of plumbing the outlet of my skimmer back down to the bottom of this section in my sump to help keep the solids suspended and then the skimmer would pull them out. Maybe this will work
