Well I do 4 gallons per inch. But in a 38, you could do around 14 and 4 fish that grow big!!!

Not a fan of clownfish tbh. So with that said what else would you recommend? I was looking at a red lip blenny and a Royal Gramma so far, would that be okay and what else can mix with that?

Gold Assessor, Black Cap Basslet or Firefish (they are jumpers so you would need a lid) are good options for smaller tanks

To those recommendations I'd add a shrimp/goby pair and maybe a cardinal of some kind.

Not in a 38g.

Stocking capacity really depends on a number of a factors such as tank filtration, fish temperament, swimming activity, and eating habits.

Okay well I have a protein skimmer and a aqua clear 70 and 50 on my tank. I'm new to the whole what fish can go with which so what would you recommend I put together? I really want a Royal Gramma so going from there I guess what would be good tank mates?

Anything basically, before you get any fish, look up info about the fish on liveaquaria.com and/or saltwaterfish.com not to buy fish, but to Read max length and aggressiveness.

Some fish that would go well with a royal gramma in a 38g include:
Flame or longnose hawk
Midas or stigmatura blenny
Grammistes or forktail blenny
Zebra or scissortail blenny.

Less is more just as a general rule, also add them slowly

^Agreed. Start slowly, test often. 3-5 fish should be a reasonable target.

You can fit around 8-9 fish in that tank. BUT, all must grow max to under 4 inches!!!

Starting out I would recommend against this advice. This member's experience is less than 6 months.

You can do that but you will probably end up with a lot of dead fish. I would personally recommend 4 at most, better too few than too many

Longnose hawkfish are easy and hardy. It would be a fine choice.
