Depends upon which type of fish you get. Conservatively 5-6(small-medium fish(3-5" fully grown)), but I always plan for growth.

I was told rule of thump is one inch of fish per 10 gallons of tank. But that means i am only going to be able to have 3 or 4 fish. Do you think i can go over that?

Each tank and hobbyist vary as far as stocking capacity goes. The size and quality of equipment also play a role. As does the behavior of the fish in the tank.
