Hi all,

I recently picked up a Reef Octopus S-130 for my 50 gallon cube because I needed something that fit my stock SCA sump, was super quiet, and was big enough for me to use in a large tank in a few years.

I know that it's overkill but can this cause issues going forwards?

Thanks!

Gabe

In my experience, no. I’ve had this 40 gallons with 200g skimmers on them. I’ve had 400gallons with 700g skimmers. I currently have 700g with 2 skimmers on them both rated for 700g. I feed a lot and have a bare bottom tank. Help take out organic.

If you strip to much nutrients from your tank your corals won’t be happy.. for me it’s a balancing act and I just run skimmer periodically as needed.

In my opinion skimmer manufacturers usually overstate the tank size ratings. I usually size a skimmer but selecting one that is rated for approximately twice the size of my display. Couple ideas if you are concerned with overskimming...... I have heard of people running skimmers for only 12 hours of the day or you can adjust your skimmmer to skim dry rather wet.
