Nah, the light would only serve to fuel algal growth in the sump...which, when it's not a beneficial macroalgae, is a very scary thought.

No - I have lights in my sump purely to make inspection / maintenance easier - especially since the inside of my cabinet is really dark... If you can see all the components of your sump without the need for a light, save yourself the money !
I used this before I set up my refugium. This is from Bunnings in Aus, I'm sure other places have a similar product. Its just a stick on strip and battery operated.
