A refugium is a refuge from predators. So, your sump is already a refugium.

Consider removing everything but return pump, then fill sump up with live rock and you have a cryptic refugium.

I have never heard of that . I thought a Refugium was where media was put . So what is it actually used for and when / why ? If you don't mind

I operate cryptic refugiums with live rock: pods, worms & sponges. No media.

In the above sump, pods would grow and feed the tank. No media.
