One factor would be, 'How much sand and rock will you have in your display tank?' I'm getting this 150-gallon back online... with the amount of rock I'll be using, I doubt adding anything to the sump would make much of an improvement. On the other hand, if a person had minimal rock in the tank, then rubble-rock, bio-balls, etc., could certainly be beneficial in the sump. Hope this helps.

Thank you! The other tank is already back online; no rock in the sump.

The answers will vary based on approach, but imo if you are going with rock at all, go with real live rock, such as from Tampa Bay Saltwater or Gulf Live Rock. Even a smaller pile of this in your sump will help your tank in the long run. Imo, don't bother with "live" rock from your LFS, unless they are truly exceptional reefers and the rocks are visibly full of a variety of beneficial life. Otherwise, from an LFS, this is often just wet dry rock and ime (limited, but not good) comes with more pests than benefits.
If you want a refugium for natural nutrient-pollutant control, allocate space in your sump for that.

I agree with @Euphylliaphyle . If you have anyone that you know has a clean established tank, this really helps. I got some from my LFS that I had cycling there for a while in its own small tank ( I've know him a long time lol). Really limited the fluctuations in the water column. I think I had my best luck running chaeto with a light opposite of what the light schedule on the tank was. you're almost guaranteed to get some pods with the chaeto - Free food!

Part of my sump is for the skimmer, part is a refugium for macro algae only and part is the return area and equipment.

I didn't have any rock in my sump for quite some time.

I added more rock, nad too much, and put some in the sump.

I don't think there's a right answer.

I have a suspicion that too much live rock in my sump caused flow restriction and has trapped detritus, thus causing bad cyano. I remove a piece every week to increase movement, and still have quite a bit left.
