Sounds good! The best thing about building your own is that you get exactly what you want. I'm sure you already have, but draw it out all the ways you think will work. Then pick your favorite. That's how I've done it the last few times I built one. Good luck!

Here are some pictures of mine. It works awesome. But I built it all in a day. Should have taken my time. As you can see it's all glass except the filter sock part. 55 bucks to get glass cut to size. And I cut up a old acrylic tank for filter sock.

I left allot of room in skimmer area so I can fit any skimmer out there. And have a fuge separate from sump

This is the layout of my 40B sump. Filter socks, dosing / ATO inputs, skimmer & reactors chamber, bubble trap, return section and a frag tank with adjustable level shelves on the far right. If I had it to do over, I would leave off the frag tank and give myself more room for the return section and make the skimmer / reactor section larger also.

So,probably leave the frag out for more room. I'm still learning about the reactors. Should I make a chamber for them separately

That's the fun of making your own. You can design it to suit your needs. I would only suggest that you think ahead and decide what equipment you will want to use, find out what the dimensions of the equipment are and plan your layout accordingly. Sometimes it is not easy to retrofit, so doing it the way you need it the first time will save you some hassle.

And a refugium? Thoughts about them? Live rock and some cheato?
You can incorporate one of those as well, but it will leave less room for other things. I have used remote refugiums on two different tanks. A small refugium with a small clump of chaeto may not really be large enough to be effective at lowering nutrients, but will provide a nice place for pods to grow to provide a source of live food for your fish.

Heres mine that I just built. It's goes drain section, 3 filter socks, skimmer/dosing section, return. I also installed 3 gate valves to run carbon, uv and ats off their own dedicated pump from my return.

Nice! The sock holder - is that a pre-fab kit? If so, I would be interested in checking that out. May I ask where you found it? Thanks.

Last time I was on the site he didn't have the 40b kit listed, I would send him a pm on here to inquire about it.
