I always thought that dark was a bad sign that something is going wrong in the tank.

Imo I don't think so, you want dark skin mate. If the skim mate is lighter in color then its not taking much organics out of the water. Depends on how you look at things. Is the skimmer not great or is there nothing for the skimmer to skim does that make since
