Have you thought about a biota yellow tang?? They come super tiny but grow and color up fast! And it would fit in your tank well

Luck has nothing to do with my journey. Like many others here, my knowledge and skills have been cultivated over decades in this hobby. Many lessons having been learned the hard way, which is why when we try to impart said knowledge, you would do well to listen.
Purple are hit or miss on aggression.

Purple is doable, they usually are nasty though. So if you do a purple get it as small as you can. My little 2 inch one was trying to tail smack my new full grown sailfin I added yesterday. Little butt nugget.
Oooo maybe no on the purple then OP, that six foot mark is usually a minimum distance when it comes to tangs. Yellow would probably be better temper-wise and space since they are smaller than purples. You might be able to do the purple if you rehome the orange shoulder just cause those get massive as well (seen many at the 12 inch mark and above). If a purple feels cramped it will be a terror. They also dont like other tangs and new tangs that they think challenge their rank so to speak. My rank in my tank right now is my sohal as tank boss, my sailfin looks to be coming in second instead of the purple which he is NOT happy about, and then my white tail. She does her own thing, only gets mean when they swim in her caves she frequents. Its all about territory, rock work, food and space with tangs

my tank is longer than 5 foot but it’s not 6 feet. I know it’s not ideal for tangs but this is my first saltwater aquarium. In a year or two if I’m still in the hobby I’m happy to buy a 400 gallon to help them thrive. I alr have money aside but I’m not trying to play the future tank game. All the fish currently do not look crowded at all so I am not too concerned yet. If I do get a 400 ish tank then I would get a 8x4x2 custom build
Gotcha. You might be able to get away with a purple. Ive had 3, my two adults were aggressive as heck (both in my 125 gallon). My current purple is only 2 inches (in my 300 gallon) and is a baby, so he has a little bit of an attitude but was put in the same time as a juvenile sohal and those are mean af so he settled into his role as second. Now third with the adult sailfin. You might get lucky and have one thats content
Just because it doesn’t look crowded to you, doesn’t mean the fish don’t feel it. And if you’re so certain that you’re going to get the new tank, why not wait until you have it set up? There’s no point in subjecting fish to improper enclosure sizes when the solution is a year or two out.
That’s true but it doesn’t show any signs of being cramped yet.
Right, now... but even adding 1 fish causes a re establishing of pecking order, and you're considering adding some of the biggest and most aggressive fish. Bigger tank gives more docile fish the chance to escape danger. It doesn't go well when they can't even get out of sight of the aggressor. They get beat up, cornered and starve. It's not pleasant to watch.
That you can notice! Plus these fish grow quite quickly. Why wait until they show symptoms when you can correct it now?
OP I will say Cheese Griller is extremely knowledgable and has helped me a TON with my stocking in my tank since I wanted a very specialized fish as my centerpiece fish (sohal tang) and his advice hasnt ever led me wrong and is honest with me when I have an idea that just isnt going to work. :)
