My blue Hippo tangs have changed color and are now black hippo tangs. 2 tangs in 2 different systems. My guess is that both are over 10 years old, but still strange that both changed at about the same time in 2 unconnected systems.

I also have a Tomini tang, over 8 years old, that disappeared 2-3 months ago. This is a ‘packed’ 500 g reef that is 6’x5’, so no way to find bodies!
Couple days ago he/she (?) came out front for feeding time! Looked me in the eye, and said ‘what!’ However the dorsal and anal fins were completely different… they had lost their triangular shape with bright red/orange color and now are short and only a thin lighter red outline!

Anyone have a guess? Rather not state my guess, don’t want to sway other’s opinions.

don't know, but I know some fish change their colors to lighten or darken when they are stressed, but since you have a developed aquarium, I don't know why they would do this.

One of the workers at my LFS has two of them that also did this when they were fully grown. Very odd! Maybe its an age thing? No one seems really has adult hippos in their tanks other than a few people here and there! Congrats on having them that long, I think they loom cool! :)

Lol-- "no way to find bodies!" Sounds like a horror movie.
It’s true! I’d have to remove so much to maybe find a body! Rather leave it to my trusty clean up crew.

I have multiple leather corals that are 18”-24”, one is trying to cross the entire tank, it’s approx 18”wide by 30”+ long !
