Tank question

My 5 year old 150 planet tank sprung a leak from the bottom seal about 2 weeks ago. Been looking for a used replacement, as that tank is 2 grand just to replace before shipping, and not a whole lot of confidence in planet anymore.

Found a few good deals in fb marketplace, but usually by the time I message them the tank is gone or in the works of being gone.

My lfs has a used 150, oceanic tank, which means it’s probably at least 15 years old. Claims a customer took it down to move out of state, tank and stand he wants 500

Am I asking for trouble buying this cheap given the age? He says oceanic made great tanks . Thought about resealing mine, from what I understand the panels need to be taken apart, never done before probably out if my skill zone.


Plus, going from a 5 foot by 2 foot tank to a 6 foot by 18 inch tank for a mixed reef, how bad is that 24 to 18 inch width?

A marine land 125 is about 800 new now. I would then need a stand for it.


So being oceanic in your mind isn’t really meaningful in anyway I take it?

I’m not advising to do it or not, but I took down my oceanic 120 about 8 years ago, stored it in the garage, and when restarting my tank again this year, I leak tested it and am now using it.

From a chemistry standpoint, does the silicone have to break down with age, or is it older tanks shift and move thus causing stress breaks?

Let me rephrase that, when a tank leaks, is it silicone break down from age chemically, or is it physical from shifting , moving etc

I don't think you'll be happy with a 6' long tank that is only 18" front to back. If you will have any decent size fish, the need room to turn around-- factoring the rock work in an 18" space.

I am not sure what goes wrong over time. My oceanic is a super heavy tank and I am not particularly worried about it.

Any reason to be more confident with the silicone of an oceanic, albeit 20 years old?

That’s been weighing in my mind,
Altho, I lose 6 inches front to back, I gain a foot left to right. Fish are being temporarily housed in Rubbermaids, wish I had more time. I’d wait 6 months for right set up

Those old oceanic tanks were built to last. I would buy one in a quick minute. I have a 65 gallon one in my basement that’s old as dirt and still holds water.

Did you by the stand from Planet as well or just the tank? If you bought the stand and tank from them, they warrant them for 5yrs.
