So I come from a long line of veterans both grandfathers were in Korea great great uncle green beret POW in Vietnam and my moms older brother who’s current army ranger soon to be retired after 37 years in service.I say all that because I’ve seen how aquariums have help to calm their ptsd and in my own life help me with severe depression and anxiety so my goal is to try and start a charity where I could set up simple saltwater tanks mabye some softie reefs for vets dealing with mental health struggles and as a way for them to get involved in a community of people who value eachother no solid plan yet just been on my heart to do something meaningful for them and their families any feedback would be appreciated

Wow, I think this is a wonderful project. I don’t have any helpful feedback, but just wanted to commend you on wanting to help our vets.

Sounds like a great project and I'd work with Hello Reef for something like this. Since they have small format tanks with all the needed gear, finding a sponsor or funding tanks from them seems like the way to go.

Are they on reef2reef

I think that's a great idea.

I know cost per setup for something like this can be expensive, and I would be open to supplying Random Flow Generator nozzles and the appropriate fittings and attachments for the setups.

With a proper return pump, the RFGs can replace expensive powerheads, especially for a softies tanks. It could easily simplify the builds and make them less expensive, allowing you to reach more people.

let me know how i can help

This is a great idea, and very compassionate. I hope you are successful. You might consider posting to some Facebook groups about it, both veteran-related groups as well as reef related. Also talk to some local LFS about sponsoring.

If you can build a successful model locally, you might consider documenting how to organize and set it up and then try and coordinate more groups nationwide, and reach out to manufacturers for donations or sponsorship.

I’m not a veteran but do have PTSD and a medley of chronic health conditions, and setting up the aquarium was done as a way to keep my mind occupied as well as a way to relax by zoning out and watching the tank. It certainly isn’t without its stresses (new tank hurdles, limited funds, etc), but overall I’m still considering it a net positive.
