If you have a water softener always use soft water if possible, the membrane will last 10 years versus 24 to 36 months. Keep the waste at 4:1 if it is very hard which I suspect it is and do not use a low waste system or it will end up costing you much more in membrane and DI replacements than the amount of waste water costs.

Yeah we do have really hard water and I don't have a water softener. With the adjustable spectrapure waste water can I be put to 4:1 or only 2:1 and 3:1?

The low wast systems come with a 3:1 and 2:1 restrictor, their normal systems come with an untrimmed restrictor you yourself adjust to 4:1.

Any RO/DI can and should be 4:1 if you have hard water. An untrimmed capillary tube flow restrictor is $5-$6 and can be trimmed once you have the system installed and know your parameters.
