Teco Chiller TR20 1/3 hp

hi u all..i need an expert opinion on making an investment on a teco 1/3 hp chiller...
Currently i am running 57 gln DT with 30 gln sump with 300wt of lights on for about 8 hours a day...I am planning to upgrade to 200 to 300gln not untill the end of this year..I live in texas and does get hot out here..My question is this that is it safer to buy a bigger chiller for an under rated tank and is teco is the best investment...????

TECO chillers are pretty rad... Italian made and kind of a hastle to get when ordered and spendy.... but work really well and seldom have any issues.

It's hot here in my place. But I'm running central AC at 80 degree in my house and my basement where all my tanks are at is usually 78 degree. It's perfect. I do run Metal Halides on my DT and T5s on my frag tank. But I have powerful fans blowing across my tanks, so my lights don't raise temp at all.

My point is that try to figure out a way to run your tanks without a chiller if possible.

I had a 180 gallon SPS tank many years ago with MH lights and VHO bulbs. On top of the heat given off by the lighting, the chiller works, but you will need to vent the heat out of the room the reef tank will be sitting in. Just my 2 cents...

Not an expert but will give you my opinion for whatever its worth! If you're upgrading to a 200 gallon system and can't find a way to run without a chiller, I think that the TR20 would be a good investment. I currently run one on my 180DT (55 gal sump/fuge) and have been extremely happy with it. It gets pretty darn hot here in Florida in the summertime and even with my a/c running my tanks temperature would fluctuate too much and get too warm in the afternoons .... even with several cooling fans. The TR20 handles the cooling with no problem, actually only kicks on for maybe 15-20 minutes a few times during the afternoons. It is pretty quiet and does have an option to quiet the fan down even more if you're close to it and watching tv or something. I've found it to be quiet, efficient, attractive enough to sit next to the tank cabinet and easy to maintain. Have only been running it for about 1 1/2 years but it has performed flawlessly the whole time.

I don't see why you would have any problems running it on your smaller tank until the upgrade ..... it just won't kick on unless it has to and it will run for shorter amount of time.
